Kansas Senior Tax Relief ProgramsKansas Seniors Are Leaving
Thousands on the Table.
Kansas offers powerful property tax relief programs specifically for seniors — but most homeowners don't know they qualify. As a licensed Kansas real estate broker with 20 years of experience, Amber Dollard helps seniors navigate every available program to minimize their property tax burden.
Kansas Senior Tax Relief Programs
There are multiple programs available — and you may qualify for more than one. Tap each card to see full eligibility rules, how it works, and how to file.
SAFESR
Safe Senior — Property Tax Relief for Low Income Seniors
The most powerful senior tax relief in Kansas. If you qualify, the state refunds 75% of the property taxes you paid — potentially saving you thousands per year.
SVR
Senior Valuation Relief — Freeze Your Base Assessment
The SVR program locks in your property's appraised value at a 'base year' level. You receive a refund for any taxes you paid above that frozen baseline — protecting you from rising assessments year after year.
Homestead Refund
Kansas Homestead Property Tax Refund
A broader income-based refund program open to more Kansas homeowners and even renters. The refund is based on the percentage of your income that goes toward property taxes.
Federal Senior Bonus
Federal Senior Bonus Deduction (2025–2028)
A brand-new federal deduction (2025–2028) giving seniors an extra $6,000 on top of the standard deduction, reducing your total federal taxable income and cutting your federal tax bill.

Common Questions
Can I apply for multiple programs at the same time?
In most cases, yes — but not always with the same program. You cannot receive both SAFESR and the Homestead Refund for the same year (you pick the better one). However, you can stack the Kansas SVR with SAFESR, and the Federal Senior Bonus deduction is completely separate from all state programs.
What is the deadline to file SAFESR?
Claims are filed between January 1 and April 15 each year with the Kansas Department of Revenue using Form K-40PT. Don't miss this window — it only comes once a year.
What if my property is over-assessed AND I'm a senior?
You can pursue both a property tax appeal AND apply for senior relief programs — these are not mutually exclusive. In fact, a successful appeal lowers your assessed value, which can reduce the taxes you pay, but if you're on SAFESR, the refund is based on what you actually paid — so appealing before filing can increase your net savings.
I've never filed for any of these programs. Can I get back-refunds?
In most cases, you can only file for the current claim year. There are limited provisions for amended returns. The most important thing is to start filing now and not let future refunds go unclaimed.
How does Amber help with this process?
Amber provides free appraisal reviews to identify over-assessments, helps you understand your appeal options, and connects you with the right resources for senior relief programs. She is not a tax preparer, but she works alongside CPAs and county resources to make sure nothing is missed.
